Ski Antarctica
This Antarctica Ski & Antarctica Sea Kayaking adventure uses a 75ft Sailboat to explore the wonders of the Antarctic Peninsula. This is a tailor-made expedition, specifically designed to provide a flexible, small group experience like no other.
Ski, kayak or sail the choice is ours. Picture yourself standing at the top of a mountain looking down into a bay filled with icebergs, you’re surrounded by glistening snow-capped peaks whose massive glaciers terminate into the turquoise ocean. The sound of these rumbling glaciers echoes through the bay and is mixed with the distant calls of a nearby Penguin colony.
Antarctic Sea Kayaking
Or kayaking past huge ice walls with Humpback and Minke whales surfacing close by, Leopard seals patrolling the beaches on the hunt for a young or injured penguin. At the end of each glorious day, we’ll return to the comforts of our floating home, where we’ll be greeted with a warm or cold beverage and the mouth-watering smells of the evening’s meal.
Skiing is the main focus of this Antarctica Ski & Sea Kayaking expedition. Whenever the weather allows we will venture into the mountains, skiing as much as possible. Ski conditions in Antarctica can range from knee-deep powder to perfect corn and everything in between. There are numerous peaks we can summit. There are also a number of first ascents still to be claimed. A certified guide will accompany you on all Antarctica Ski & Antarctica Sea Kayak outings, crevasse rescue training and beacon training will take place in Ushuaia before boarding the yacht. Before each ski outing participants will be briefed on the objective and the hazards.
Participants are required to have advanced ski skills and previous ski touring experience. Kayaking is incorporated into the program when the weather makes mountain travel difficult or dangerous. Kayaking is a fantastic way to explore the wonders of Antarctica. We’ll move through the water silently enjoying the incredible scenery and the abundant wildlife. Previous kayaking experience is not required but is recommended. All participants will be given a thorough kayak safety briefing and issued a drysuit.
The Yacht
The Spirit of Sydney
The Spirit of Sydney is the perfect expedition yacht. She is a 60 foot, aluminum-hulled, fully rigged, motor sailor, registered as a commercial – Category 0 (zero – Unrestricted) vessel. She carries a comprehensive range of safety, operational and navigational equipment. A 130hp turbo diesel engine powers the vessel and she is equipped with 1 zodiac tender. She is an ocean greyhound with long clean lines and flared bow sections for surfing the big rollers of the southern ocean, offering an exhilarating experience.
Spirit of Sydney offers a reasonable level of comfort with a heated insulated interior, antarctic specified water maker, and hot freshwater showers, however, the emphasis is on safety, adventure, and hands-on experience.
The pleasant raised saloon with windows at eye level has a diesel drip heater in-set in the saloon table and offers a cozy social environment, while the aluminum and plexiglass ‘ bomber style’ dodger over the cockpit keeps the crew relatively warm and dry whilst on watch. The large sugar scoop or stern platform is an ideal platform for kayaking, diving, or just boarding the zodiac.
Spirit has been meticulously maintained and refitted so that she has evolved on a yearly basis.
